How Does Hemp Work?

Ray Mwareya

Hemp, one of the most familiar crops in human history, is predicted to become one of the most popular plants of 2021 and the future.

Naturally one of the most popular questions we get is – but how does hemp work?

We set out to make the answer easy for you and help your decision.-making process

1. Hemp doesn’t get you high

Almost all Cannabis sativa plant varieties contain different amounts of THC.

THC is the intoxicating chemical component of cannabis that gets you high. Cannabis, also known as marijuana, contains high concentrations of THC; whereas hemp contains low concentrations of THC and high concentrations of CBD. Hemp is a species of Cannabis Sativa that, by law, carries no more than 0. 3% of THC.

So, any Cannabis sativa that contains no more than 0., 3% in THC is classified as hemp.

2. Hemp

One of the chief ways hemp works is by extracting cannabinoids from the flowering tops of the hemp plant. In extraction, what´s being targeted are useful compounds called phytocannabinoids

CBD is the most known of these compounds. But it is not just CBD. Hemp oil, a whole plant extract, carries with its so many mixtures of different types of phytocannabinoids, terpenes and flavonoids all of which gel and work together to create specific effects.

3. On our body: a little science

This is probably the most vexing question – how do hemp cannabinoids work in our bodies?

Cannabinoids from hemp support and interact with the endocannabinoid system. In short, the endocannabinoid system is a regulatory structure that works on our immune system, mental health, digestive processes, and more.

It is important to go a little bit deeper in our understanding of the Endocannabinoid system if we want to understand how hemp works in our system.

Scientists discovered the Endocannabinoid System in the 1990s but even today a lot is still unknown about how it works. What experts know today is that the endocannabinoid system regulates our appetite, sleep, moods, memory, or decision systems and it contains three parts: receptors, enzymes, and endocannabinoids. It is important to state that these three parts work whether we use CBD or not. These parts function regardless of whether someone uses CBD or not.

Receptors are all over our bodies and they are the part to which endocannabinoids stick; enzymes are numerous but only two types of them break down endocannabinoids, and Endocannabinoids help the body keep its internal systems running efficiently.

Now it is critical to understand how CBD works by explaining the relationship between the receptors and endocannabinoids. In our bodies, two types of medically recognized types of receptors exist CB1 and CB2. CB1 receptors exist primarily in the central nervous system and maintain our pain, movement, appetite, mood, and memory processes. CB2 receptors are located in the peripheral nervous system and impact pain and inflammation. When enzymes break down the cannabinoids, the endocannabinoids attach to these receptors. Scientists believe that CBD does not directly attach to the receptors but impacts it in certain ways. When these receptors are activated we experience the many beneficial health effects associated with cannabinoid compounds.

4. Hemp seed-soil

The oil harvested from hemp seed is a major way hemp works. Please take note that hemp seed oil is different from hemp oil. The hemp seed oil does not contain CBD but it is targeted for its very healthy fatty acids and deployed for use in beauty, food, hair industries, industrial purposes, and more.

5. Stress help

Hemp oil in particular has shown positive effects to affect the goings-on in the limbic area of our brain. The limbic area regulates our fight or flight responses in acute situations. In 2011, a study revealed that hemp oil calms fears about public speaking considerably more than when a placebo product was taken.

6. Brain health effect

This is one of the most promising ways hemp is expected to work in the future and to make it clear that studies are ongoing and no definitive position has been reached. But a study on mice in 2014 revealed that CBD oil blocked the emergence of social-recognition deficit, which is a very prevalent feature of age-relative brain declines. Again – ongoing research is underway to make final findings on this promising study.

7. Epilepsy and hemp oil

This one is a very exciting potential about how hemp oil is expected to work in the future. Patients afflicted by recalcitrant epilepsy for years are using the CBD in the hemp oil and the results are helpful. In fact, the prescription of cannabidiol, under the brand Epidiolex, has been approved by the US Food and Drug and Administration for the management of seizures that come with two rare types of epilepsy.

8. How hemp works and dosage

If hemp has these interesting effects – naturally you ask: how much hemp must I use safely?

Currently, there are no set guidelines and limits for use of hemp oil dosing. However, as with many other medicinal products, the best dosage is one that produces therapeutic effects and is well tolerated by the body.

Hence, it is important to consult a physician first to determine how much hemp oil you should take. Pharmacists Canada explains that the therapeutic effect is not cast in stone and varies from patient to patient. To be clearer – consult a pharmacist or physician first to get a proper dosage that fits your biological makeup.

To find your best results, start low and build slow until you find your desired effect. If you take the product after food or a high-fat snack you can improve your experience. If you find yourself having irritability you likely are taking too much CBD and need to reduce your serving size.
